Week 11: Introduction to Budgeting

Objectives:

To introduce the kids to how to plan their money, focusing on how much they’ll earn (income), how much they’ll save, and how much they’ll spend.
To help them learn how to decide what’s most important to spend on.

Activities:

Budget Creation: Kids will use pretend money and shopping catalogs to practice how to make a budget. It’s like playing shop-shop but with the goal of not spending all your money at once.

Lesson Plan:

We’ll start with explaining what a budget is – basically, it’s a plan on how to spend your money wisely. We’ll talk about income (the money you get), savings (the money you keep for later), and expenses (the money you spend).

Worksheets:

Each kid will get a worksheet that looks like a monthly budget. They’ll fill in how much money they think they’ll get, how much they want to save, and how much they’ll spend on different things.

Book List:

We’ll read “Just Saving My Money” by Mercer Mayer. It’s a fun story that teaches why saving money is important.

Tools & Equipment:

We’ll use pretend money, shopping catalogs, and calculators. This way, kids can learn by actually doing it, not just hearing about it.

Toys & Materials:

If we can, we’ll also use some budgeting apps or computer programs to make it even more fun and interactive.

Teaching Learning Materials (TLMs):

We’ll give out templates for budgeting and some real-life examples to show why it’s important to plan how you spend your money.
