A Final Note to the Indian Parent

As educators like Jerome Bruner have reminded us, some things matter so much that we can only approach them playfully. Raising a small child is exactly such a thing.

So do not set out to build a perfect little ‘nursery school’ on your dining table. Do not chase milestones, or fret that the child down the road already knows her ABCs and the names of nine planets. The framework you have heard so much about in these pages says, in its own careful language, what every loving grandmother has always known: that small children learn through play, through love, through song and story and mess and routine, in the language of their own home, among people who delight in them.

Make your playgroup a place for laughter, for sharing, for masti. Let the children hear your voice and your singing, see you laughing, watch you handle a spilled glass of milk without the world ending. If you turn up each morning with a playful smile rather than a rigid lesson plan, you will find that you — and the children — do not merely survive the year. You will, all of you, truly enjoy it.

And that — the joy, the ananda — is not the reward for good early education. It is the heart of it.

Most preschool curricula are
repackaged worksheets.

Yours does not have to be. Opening a preschool from scratch, fixing one that has stopped growing, or teaching your own child at home, the hard part is the same. Someone has to decide what gets taught, in what order, and why. I built The ZERO Curriculum, India’s first modular ECCE curriculum, after 23 years inside classrooms, teacher-training rooms, and policy fights. I sit with you and build the thing that actually works for your setup.

  • Starting a new preschool. Curriculum, daily structure, and a hiring brief for teachers, before you take a single admission.
  • Upgrading one that has plateaued. We find what is actually dragging it down and fix that, not everything at once.
  • Homeschooling. A real scope and sequence for your child, not a pile of printouts off the internet.
